The Right Way to Play Fetch with Your Dog Guidelines

Updated: 3 days ago

Playing fetch with your dog is a fantastic way to bond, provide exercise, and reinforce training. However, ensuring the game is played correctly can enhance these benefits and prevent any potential issues. Here are some guidelines to ensure you and your dog get the most out of fetch.

#1 Use Two Toys of Equal Value

Start the game with two toys of equal value. This strategy helps maintain your dog's interest and prevents fixating on one particular toy. It also encourages your dog to return the first toy, knowing that another fun toy is ready to be thrown.

⚠️ Avoid tennis balls or toys your dog can easily compress as they can become a serious choking hazard.

#2 Encourage Proper Retrieval

When playing fetch, it's essential that your dog brings the ball back and drops it before you throw another one. This practice teaches your dog the importance of completing the task and reinforces obedience.

Use a long leash if your dog tends to run away when playing fetch.

If your dog doesn’t drop the ball, resist the temptation to take it directly from their mouth. Instead, make the toy you have more exciting. You can do this by running backward or acting playful, encouraging your dog to chase you and the other toy. This not only keeps the game fun but also keeps your dog engaged and willing to participate.

#4 Keep Throws Short and Safe

When throwing the ball, keep the distance short and below waist level. This safety measure helps prevent injuries from overexertion or awkward landings.

#5 Add Obedience

Before throwing a toy, ask your dog to do obedience commands. Start with simple commands.

By adhering to these fetch guidelines, you ensure that playtime is productive, safe, and enjoyable for both you and your furry friend.
